Migration and Society (MASO) has officially launched the Excel in Education Project at Thandazga Primary School, located on the outskirts of Mzuzu City. The project targets improved learning outcomes for vulnerable pupils, with a particular focus on children from households affected by labour migration.

Project Background

Thandazga Primary School serves a community where many households have fathers or breadwinners working in South Africa and other neighbouring countries. The prolonged absence of parents — particularly fathers — has a documented impact on children's educational performance, attendance and overall wellbeing.

The Excel in Education Project aims to address these educational gaps through targeted academic support, teacher capacity building, and community engagement activities designed to keep children in school and performing at their best.

Key Activities

Project activities include after-school tutoring sessions, provision of learning materials to the most vulnerable pupils, training for teachers on child-centred learning approaches, and community sensitisation sessions for parents and guardians on the importance of education during periods of parental migration.

MASO's Project Officer for Education, Audrey Murphy, leads the day-to-day implementation of the project and has been working closely with the school's head teacher and staff to ensure the programme is integrated into the school's existing structures.
